For most short Japan trips, 3GB to 5GB is a practical starting point for maps, train routes, translation, messaging and ordinary browsing. Travellers who regularly stream video, upload large files or use a hotspot should consider 10GB. A light user who mainly needs directions and messages may be comfortable with 1GB.

A fixed-data plan gives you a total allowance for the selected validity period, not a fresh allowance each day. Match both the data amount and validity to your trip; using up the allowance is different from reaching the expiry date.
If you prefer an unlimited plan, check its daily high-speed allowance, reduced speed after that allowance, validity and hotspot terms. Unlimited does not mean unlimited high-speed data.
A 500MB starter can suit light arrival needs such as messages and directions. It is a small allowance, not a good fit for video, automatic backups or hotspot use.

What uses mobile data in Japan?
Navigation, rail-platform checks, translation and messaging usually use modest amounts of data. Video streaming, automatic photo backup, app updates and hotspot use consume much more. Download offline maps and media over Wi-Fi before departure if you want a smaller plan to last longer.
When should you install the eSIM?
Install it before departure while you have reliable Wi-Fi, but keep it turned off for mobile data until you need it. The current Japan options begin validity on the first connection to a supported network. Always check the plan details shown with your order before installation.
How to connect after arrival
- Open your phone's mobile-data settings.
- Turn on the RoamUno eSIM line.
